Chewed on it for a bit. We didn’t know it fall, wife was like “what is that noise?” That when on for a few minutes before we investigated and found the culprit.
It’s the hard plastic one, so there is no major damage, just some scratches. I think I have two options: use a lighter to smooth out out, or sand it down. Thoughts? What grit sandpaper would I use?

The grit you’ll begin with depends of the depth of the scratches, try with 240 and if it is not enough go to a bigger grit. You may cut ribbons of your paper, apply your thumb where the scratches are and pull the ribbon between the plastic and your finger to sand the spots with precision. Than erase the scratches with a higher grain sandpaper. I would go 240, 400, 800, 1500 and finish with 3000. Then use some automotive polish to bring back the original gloss.
