  1. Actually the anal sphincter muscle is at least 3 controllable muscles (and a few smooth muscles that you can’t access).

    The anus is not a simple hole, but a canal and the sphincters are aligned along it.

    The cutting off one is the most outer one and the one most people are familiar with.

    Then there is one right in the middle an one rather at the inside. The middle one can hold stuff in place and the inner one pushes stuff out. They are all part of the normal defecation process.

    The pushing direction is just the simple result of their relative position in the canal. Think of a tube of toothpaste that you can squish at the end, middle and front. Depending on how much is inside you squish it at a different place. If you wanted to get everything out in one go, you would squeeze from back to front – and that’s exactly what the anal sphincters do w/o you thinking about it.

    A very nice practice to get familiar with the deeper sphincters is to sit down on a hard surface like the floor and try to “kiss” the floor with the anus.
